Moving down to Plowden.

In The late 1950's, Len and Mary and their four young children moved down to Plowden on the Shropshire side of the border. They moved into a 35 acre farm on the Plowden Estate. Life at Onny Lodge was different. The house had been modernised, there was electricity and ‘indoor facilities’ it was like coming out of the Victorian age and entering the twentieth century at last. The 60’s saw their lives become easier in many ways. They could buy their first electrical gadgets and after a while even a television arrived! Len thought it meant the end of conversation and family life but couldn't be prized away from it when the football or snooker was on. He loved football and was a great supporter of Shrewsbury Town, there was usually a car load going from Plowden. In the 1970’s he could see that there was a demand for someone or somewhere that could repair farm machinery, make bespoke items, gates, fences etc. so he started his own agricultural engineering business and ran it side by side with the farm. It was very successful and he had many challenging projects. He has a lasting legacy in the many ornamental fences and gates around the area including gates at Lydham and Wentnor churches.
